Copywriting is the art and science of writing words that persuade people to take action. It is what turns a website visitor into a customer, a reader into a subscriber, and a prospect into a lead.
Good copywriting is not about being clever or creative. It is about being clear, persuasive, and customer-focused.
Here is how to write copy that sells for your Nigerian business.
Know Your Audience
Before writing a single word, understand who you are writing to. What are their problems? What keeps them up at night? What do they want more than anything? What language do they use to describe their challenges?
Write as if you are speaking to one person. Use you, not your customers or users. Personal language creates connection.
Focus on Benefits, Not Features
Features are what your product or service has. Benefits are what those features mean for the customer. A feature is 24/7 customer support. The benefit is peace of mind knowing help is available anytime. A feature is ten years of experience. The benefit is confidence that your project is in capable hands.
Always translate features into benefits. Customers buy benefits, not features.
The AIDA Formula
Attention grabs the reader's interest with a compelling headline or opening statement. Interest builds by describing the problem or opportunity. Desire creates wanting by showing how your solution improves their situation. Action tells the reader exactly what to do next.
AIDA works for landing pages, emails, ads, and almost any marketing copy.
Headline Writing
Your headline determines whether people read the rest. Spend significant time crafting headlines. Effective headline formulas include how-to headlines that promise to teach something, list headlines that promise multiple points, question headlines that engage curiosity, and benefit headlines that promise a specific outcome.
Write multiple headlines for every piece of copy. Test them to see which performs best.
Clarity Over Cleverness
Clear copy outsells clever copy every time. Readers should understand your offer within seconds. Do not make them work to figure out what you are selling.
Use simple words. Write at a reading level that is accessible to your audience. Short sentences and short paragraphs improve readability.
Social Proof
People follow the actions of others. Include testimonials, case studies, reviews, and statistics in your copy. Social proof reduces perceived risk and builds trust.
Call to Action
Every piece of copy should tell the reader what to do next. Your call to action should be specific, visible, and compelling. Use action verbs: Get, Start, Download, Subscribe, Buy, Contact.
Make the action easy. Minimize steps between reading and taking action.
Editing
Good copy is rewritten copy. Read your copy aloud to hear how it flows. Remove unnecessary words. Tighten sentences. Check for clarity. Ask someone else to read it and tell you what they understand.
